“Advertising inflatable” covers two completely different technologies that happen to share a word. Buyers compare them on price and appearance and then discover the difference in operation. The split is simple. **Helium** floats. **Cold-air** is held up by a blower. Everything else follows from that.
What each one physically does
A **helium balloon or blimp** is filled with gas lighter than the surrounding air. It rises on a tether and sits at height with nothing attached to it but the line. A 13-foot blimp flies at **120 feet**.
A **cold-air inflatable** — the dancing tube figures, the arches, the ground-mounted characters — is a fabric shape kept inflated by a continuously running blower. It is anchored to the ground and stands at its own height, typically around eighteen feet for a dancer.
Height is the real difference
This is where the choice is usually decided, and it is not close.
Eighteen feet is above pedestrians and below almost everything else. On a car lot, the first row of trucks hides a dancer. On a commercial strip, so does the building next door. A cold-air unit is visible to people already at your site or passing directly in front of it.
120 feet is above everything. It is visible from the next road over, from the highway, and from far enough away that a driver can decide to turn in.

Power versus gas
**Cold-air needs electricity.** A blower runs every hour the unit is up. That means a power source at the location, a cable, and a unit that deflates the instant the power stops. It also means an electricity cost that is small but constant, and a piece of running machinery that can fail.
**Helium needs gas.** A 13-foot blimp takes about 170 cubic feet for a fill — roughly $255 at $1.50 per cubic foot from a welding-gas supplier. It loses about one percent per day, so it needs topping off every three to seven days, around $2.50 per day of flying.
No power. No cable. No motor. It goes up and it stays up, including overnight, including in a power cut.
Movement versus stillness
Cold-air dancers move constantly, and movement catches the eye at close range. That is their genuine advantage and it is a real one.
A helium blimp is comparatively still. It drifts on its tether, it turns into the wind, but it does not wave. What it has instead is altitude and readable artwork — full-colour printing on both sides, included in the $1,526 price, legible from a distance no dancer reaches.
Weather behaviour
Both come down in wind, for different reasons.
A cold-air unit in strong wind flails, strains its anchors and can tear. It stays on your property while it fails.
A helium balloon in strong wind can leave. That is the whole risk: winds forecast over 25 miles per hour, bring it in. Wind does not wear a balloon out — wind loses one.
The 25 mph rule is the single habit that determines whether you still own a balloon in a year. Give it to a named person.
Setup and storage
**Cold-air:** stake it out, plug it in, switch on. Fast. Storage is bulky fabric.
**Helium:** first inflation takes reading the instructions; after that about ten minutes with one person. It deflates, folds flat, and stores in the 60 by 26 by 3 inch carton it shipped in. Polyurethane recovers from folding rather than creasing, which is why units survive years of pack-and-fly cycles.
